Join Local artist, Ivanka Lempitskiy, December 16, 2023 at Purple Paisley, Local Artisan Shop for a creative and fun Egg Painting class (a.k.a. Pysanka or Ukrainian Egg Decorating)! This class is always popular and greatly enjoyed.
Students will learn hands-on how to decorate an egg using an empty, cleaned chicken egg shell using beeswax and vegetable dyes. Various designs are drawn on the egg with a special pen and hot wax. Then dyes are applied to the egg. The areas of the egg that are covered by wax are protected from the dye. This leaves a blank space where another color can be applied.

*Decorated Eggs, called pysanky, are a tradition in the Ukraine. In pre-Christian times Pysanky were considered to be talisman or ritual objects. The Ancient Ukrainian peoples worshipped the sun as the source of live on earth. They believed that birds were the sun God’s chosen creations and symbolized the earth’s rebirth. Thus eggs decorated with nature symbols became integral to spring rituals. The eggs were painted with symbols to ward off evil spirits, guarantee a good harvest, insure fertility, or simply to bring a person good luck.
Over time and with the rise of Christianity, the symbols and meanings have undergone a transformation. The symbolism of the egg changed from symbolizing the earth’s rebirth to the rebirth of man. Many symbols of the old sun worship survived and were adapted to represent Easter and Christ’s Resurrection.
