Origin Of National Card and Letter Writing Month

National Card and Letter Writing month is a month-long holiday celebration initiated by the United States Postal Service as a way to honor and celebrate the efforts that go into mail service. In this day and age, letter writing has been largely supplanted by digital technology. Sending a text or an email takes a few seconds, on the other hand, letters are thought-provoking and personal. The time taken to write the letter, to address the envelope and then post the letter makes them invaluable possessions.

Handwriting a card or letter is significant for the writer and the receiver.  There are several reasons for this:

1. Greater Impact – When you open your mailbox and see handwritten correspondence it brings a little joy. The thought that a friend or loved one went out of their way to write you a heartfelt message can brighten your whole day. Handwritten letters have an emotional impact on the receiver and just mean more than an electronic message.

2. Passes the Test of Time – Electronic forms of communication can easily be deleted but handwritten cards are often kept, stored and cherished. Finding a packet of love letters written between your grandparents can be amazing and inspiring. Or, finding a card your uncle gave you when you were 6 years old can bring back fond memories.   A handwritten card can be saved, read and re-read and bring joy for years.

3. Reflection – Today is a fast-paced world. A handwritten note reminds us to slow down a bit. Some consider the act of handwriting a letter to be soothing.  The process can be a natural way to capture one’s feelings.  The time taken to write a letter is a beautiful time to reflect on one’s love and appreciation for another.

4. Sincerity – People often convey more sincere feelings in handwriting than they do in typed or electronic messaging. There’s just something about sitting down with a pen and paper that allows you to get in touch with your true, honest feelings. And, when you can write from your heart it just means so much more to the one receiving it.
