ABOUT LEW WATKINS
Lew started stitching in 2019 to relieve stress and anxiety. She said: “I knew I wanted to do something with my hands”. She immediately fell in love with embroidery, specifically thread painting (or needle painting). She was amazed at how enjoyable it was to put her phone down for hours at a time. Lew is a proponent of “unplugging” and taking time for yourself. The slow, methodical pace of embroidery is a perfect way to unwind and create at the same time.
Embroidery is primarily done by machine now, so it can be fulfilling to practice an old tradition. Lew keeps embroidery alive by sharing her thread painting skills with her friends and family. Most people have heard of embroidery, but not thread painting. Thread painting is a style of embroidery where the goal is not to have neat stitches but to “paint” the fabric by blending many different thread colors. You utilize all the colors of the rainbow, and then some, to create beautiful pieces.
She currently thread paints, crochets, and oil paints, along with other mindful hobbies like gardening, yoga, reading, and playing tennis with her husband. Lew currently works in Turner Farm’s Teaching kitchen where she teaches people of all different skill levels how to cook high-quality meals. Lew has fallen in love with sharing her time and knowledge of embroidery with the world, one small class at a time.
WHAT IS EMBROIDERY AND HOW DOES IT DIFFER FROM CROSS-STITCH AND NEEDLEPOINT?
You have no doubt heard the terms embroidery, cross-stitch and needlepoint. All three are techniques that involve the use of a needle and thread to create decorative designs on fabric. But do you know the differences?
In general needlepoint refers to work done on a canvas. Cross stitch involves the use of X-shaped stitches on an even-weave fabric. The term embroidery encompasses a wide range of stitching techniques that are used to create decorative designs generally on fabrics.
Embroidery is a very broad term that can include just about any kind of hand sewing. Although traditionally done on fabrics, some modern embroiderers have expanded to a wider range of materials, including wood, metal and paper.
The art of embroidery uses a broad range of stitches. The variation in stitching creates different textures and effects in the work. Embroidery is a very versatile craft and is used to create and or embellish a wide range of items, such clothing, home décor and accessories.
