A LITTLE ABOUT LEW

Lew started stitching in 2019 to relieve stress and anxiety. She said: “I knew I wanted to do something with my hands”. She immediately fell in love with embroidery, specifically thread painting (or needle painting). She was amazed at how enjoyable it was to put her phone down for hours at a time. Lew is a proponent of “unplugging” and taking time for yourself. The slow, methodical pace of embroidery is a perfect way to unwind and create at the same time.

Embroidery is primarily done by machine now, so it can be fulfilling to practice an old tradition. Lew keeps embroidery alive by sharing her thread painting skills with her friends and family. Most people have heard of embroidery, but not thread painting. Thread painting is a style of embroidery where the goal is not to have neat stitches but to “paint” the fabric by blending many different thread colors. You utilize all the colors of the rainbow, and then some, to create beautiful pieces.

She currently thread paints, crochets, and oil paints, along with other mindful hobbies like gardening, yoga, reading, and playing tennis with her husband. Lew currently works in Turner Farm’s Teaching kitchen where she teaches people of all different skill levels how to cook high-quality meals. Lew has fallen in love with sharing her time and knowledge of embroidery with the world, one small class at a time.

HISTORY AND ORIGIN OF EMBROIDERY

Needlepoint has deep roots in world history. Thousands of years ago, ancient Egyptians used small slant stitches to sew up canvas tents. They also used needlepoint for clothing and other decorations.  During the 17th century, needlepoint was used to decorate upholstery, thus moving the craft into modern popularity.

The origins of needlepoint and embroidery in the United States begins with the ancient cultures of Native America.  It proceeds on through the 17th century New World. In the American colonies it flourished and today remains a popular pastime.  Because of this incredibly varied and diverse history, there is no one defining style of American embroidery – instead, it is as rich and diverse as America itself, forming a vital strand of its cultural history.
