with Artist Katie Widzowski

Discover the creative art of Seascape Shell Painting in this hands-on workshop with artist Katie Widzowski. During this unique class, students will paint miniature ocean scenes on real scallop shells while exploring techniques for working on non-traditional painting surfaces.
Traditional painting surfaces can feel limiting. However, shells, stone, and other non-porous materials offer exciting new possibilities for artistic expression. In this workshop, Katie will guide students through the process of preparing unusual surfaces, applying acrylic paint successfully, and sealing finished artwork for display.
Paint on a Real Scallop Shell
Each participant will receive a scallop shell to transform into a coastal-inspired painting. The smooth inner surface creates a natural canvas for ocean scenes, sunsets, waves, or beach landscapes. Meanwhile, the shell’s ridged outer texture gives every piece added visual interest and character.
Katie will demonstrate painting techniques specifically designed for curved and non-porous surfaces. Students will practice blending colors, adding highlights, and creating depth within a small painting space. As a result, participants will leave class with both a finished artwork and new creative skills.
Learn Techniques for Unusual Surfaces
This Seascape Shell Painting class introduces students to methods they can continue using long after the workshop ends. In addition to painting on shells, Katie will discuss how artists can prepare stone and other unconventional surfaces for acrylic or oil painting projects.
Students are welcome to bring additional small non-porous objects if they wish to experiment further during class. Acrylic paints dry quickly and work beautifully for this process, making the workshop approachable for beginners as well as experienced painters.
All materials are included. Supplies feature acrylic paints, brushes, palette knives, palettes, water cups, and prepared scallop shells.
