This month we have Diana Daniels, Quilling Artist, as our Featured Artist. She is a northern Kentucky artist whose creative medium is paper! She makes intricate designs with strips of paper. Designs are set in resin for jewelry others adorn cards.
Diana chooses bright vibrant colors in her artwork. She loves the texture and designs that can be achieved. The art of quilling allows her great freedom in choosing the shape and size of her designs limited only by her imagination.
Diana has spent a lifetime teaching of young children and has experience creating art in several mediums including drawing, painting and pottery. However she focuses on the joy she gets from the ancient art of quilling. She rolls, shapes and glues strips of paper to make intricate designs. Her works include special occasion cards and invites, one of a kind wall hangings, keepsakes and decorative pieces and jewelry in resin.
What is Quilling?
This unique art form uses strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. The paper shape is then manipulated to create designs on their own or to decorate other objects, such as greetings cards, pictures, boxes, or to make jewelry.
Origins of the Art
Although paper quilling is a favorite crafting pastime it is by no means a new art form. The history of quilling is very long. There is no proper documentation on how the art form was actually started. Some people believe that quilling was started in China after the invention of paper, while others claim that quilling originated in ancient Egypt. Still others think the craft had its origins in the 13th century when rolled stripes of gilded paper cut from books. These filigree designs were then used to decorate books and religious objects.
Regardless of where quilling originated, overtime it has spread around the world. In the 18th century it was considered a “suitable” pass time for women of aristocracy. The art of quilling spread from Europe to America. It was favored by the American colonists as a decorative method. In recent years, Quilling has had a resurgence in popularity.
