For March’s featured artist, we are thrilled to spotlight Don Hurd. He is an extraordinary talent whose paintings transcend mere depictions of architecture—they are windows into the past. Don’s black-and-white artwork is painstakingly detailed. Each piece captures the essence and personality of the subject. His work invites the viewer to observe and to feel a connection to the people and places he immortalizes.
Hurd’s passion lies in preserving history through “Memories in Art.” Don’s attention to the smallest details brings every scene to life. Whether it’s an old soda fountain malt mixer nestled inside the “Dairy Cheer” or the playful glimpse of a toy poodle peeking through a front door, they contain the details of a photo. His meticulous renderings of historical buildings, homes, and bridges offer a visual legacy of our past.
One of the signature elements of Don’s work is his “touch of red”. It appears subtly yet purposefully in every piece. From the American flag to a flickering campfire, to a gentleman’s red suspenders, this crimson detail adds an extra layer of emotion and personality, giving his work an unmistakable final flourish.
Don Hurd is a graduate of Youngstown State University with a degree in Commercial Art and a former Captain in the U.S. Army. In every painting his experience and dedication to both art and service shine through. With each brushstroke, he invites us to pause, reflect, and remember the beauty and history we often take for granted. Through his eyes, we gain not only an appreciation for architecture, but for the stories those buildings hold.
