What is Quilling?

In this unique art form strips of paper are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. The paper shape is then manipulated to create designs on their own or to decorate other objects, such as greetings cards, pictures, boxes, or to make jewelry.

Origins of the Art

Although paper quilling is a favorite crafting pastime it is by no means a new art form. Its history is very long and there is no proper documentation on how the art was started. Some people believe that quilling was started in China after the invention of paper, while others claim that quilling originated in ancient Egypt. Still others think the craft had its origins in the 13th century when rolled stripes of gilded paper cut from books. These filigree designs were then used to decorate books and religious objects.

Regardless of where quilling originated, overtime it has spread around the world. In the 18th century it was considered a “suitable” pass time for women of aristocracy. The art of quilling spread from Europe to America. It was favored by the American colonists as a decorative method. In recent years, Quilling has had a resurgence in popularity.
